I would see my doctor if I were you. It might be some type of an infection down there. Without sex it is very unlikely to be an STD. But the brown streaks could be blood, and you may have started your period. It is difficult to tell.
Discharge in itself is very normal; however, it should be white or clear most of the time.
Usually brown discharge is a strong symptom of bacterial vaginosis, or Gardnerella. This is a very common bacterial infection that happens when the vaginal pH balance gets thrown off a bit. It doesn’t matter whether you’re sexually active or whether you’ve gotten your period, you can still get it; and it doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong, either – most women will get this once in a while. Other types of discharge, for example yellowish discharge, can signal a yeast infection.
Unfortunately, the only really successful way to treat it is with antibiotics – your doctor can prescribe pills or topical (vaginal) gel. Usually they’ll give you pills. You also want to see a doctor to determine whether it is actually gardnerella – sometimes other infections, like yeast, can have similar symptoms. (For example, sometimes brown/yellow discharge can occur when you have a little bit of both infections going on down there). If it’s yeast, it can be treated at home with a topical cream from the drugstore like Monistat-1.
It could be nothing – sometimes during growth and development (pre-period) you’ll experience discharge in all kids of colors – from yellow to white to brown, and it all may be normal. However, most of the time, discharge should be white or clear or very slightly yellowish – it shouldn’t stay brown or darker yellow for too long, so it’s always a good idea to check it out when that happens.
There is a Vaginitis Screening Kit, made by Vagisil, at the drugstore that give you a better idea of what it is before you call the doctor. Otherwise, I’d make an appointment to have it checked out, just to be sure.
